Being Open, In A Relationship?
Updated: May 21
While it's always OK to keep some parts of your life private, there are certain things you'll need to share, especially if you see the relationship working out. You don't have to go in too deep details during your first few months together. But, you should consider telling each other about the tough stuff, like health problems and family issues & almost certainly be upfront if you have a problematic EX.
It can be tricky at first, especially if you're worried about your partner's reaction, but, the longer you keep things from each other and deep feelings develop it will get worse and that is not fair at all. Being as open as you can be is far better for your relationship. Your partner should be a means of support and being honest with each other is the best place to start.
You'll also want to know if there's something they won't be able to handle. "It’s important to say things early on because if your partner isn’t accepting or supportive, it’s better to know now so you can move on from the relationship.
Here are a few things that you should think about discussing, when and if you're comfortable in your new relationship.
1. Life goals from small to big.
If your goals don't 100% line up with your partner's, that's OK. In most cases, there will be plenty of room for compromise. But when it comes to, life-changing goals for the future — like having kids, or getting married, it's not always easy to meet each other halfway, especially if you both already have children or one of you does and the other still wants children.
2. What You Like or Don't Like, During Sex.
The beginning of your relationship is the perfect time to lay out the course for your sex life. So, as you get more comfortable together, don't be afraid to speak up about what you like and what you don't like.
This for me is something that would be discussed pretty early on in a relationship because I would want my partner and myself to feel comfortable and to see if we match in this way, just because you're attracted to someone or like them doesn't mean you will be compatible in the bedroom.
3. Any Addictions.
Again, this is a very big one and you will want this out of the way quickly, if you're dead against drugs or any other addictions that may come up, then this really should be spoken about before anyone catches feelings.
The list could literally go on & on, the whole point is to be honest and open with each other about everything, just because you think it isn't a problem for you doesn't mean it won't be a problem for your future partner, so do them the decency of being ably to choose for themselves before they get too deep with you.
